The HRDC descended upon Goodwood yesterday for some pre-season track time. Some were shaking down new cars, some were clearing the cobwebs out from last seasons racers. We were there with Dave Griffiths Standard Vanguard to shake down the new engine. Unfortunately Dave wasn’t able to make it so Shaun Rainford stepped in as test pilot. After 3 or 4 successful sessions Shaun was able to report, “that’s a quick car now”. There was a real mix of cars from Ford Anglia’s, Mk1 Cortina’s, a couple of Mini’s, Fiats, Alfa’s, Astons and a monstrous Ford Galaxy. The track remained dry all day, and although the air was fresh the sun was out and the skies were blue. A great day that could only be topped with the sight of Julius Thurgood trundling down the pit lane in his 1938 Ford Stock car. He managed 3 or 4 laps before coming in with hypothermia.

Turner’s Turner under restoration
Restoration of the Turner’s Turner is under way. First task was to fit up a windscreen and hard top. Once these items were fettled preparation for paint could commence. The fibreglass body work has many cracks in it which have been addressed and a few accident repairs that needed tidying. We also had to cut away the remnants of any old roll cage and make a couple of small chassis repairs. Once the car comes out of the paint shop it will be fitted up with a full roll cage, some new trim and race prepped. Watch this space.
Vanguard gets a new heart
Over the winter Graham’s been building a new engine for Dave Griffith’s Standard Vanguard. At nearly 2.5 litres, with steel crank, steel rods, a 320 degree cam, a brand new gas flowed and ported cylinder head, a ported intake manifold and fully modified twin 2″ SU carbs. This should be a significant improvement over the old engine. Can’t wait to see what it does when we get it on the rollers.
Big Healey ready for Weber’s and CSL prepped for Race Retro auction
This week we’ve been busy prepping our Healey 3000 project for triple Weber carbs. These modifications were first done to the works cars to make room for the larger carbs and longer manifolds. Now the chassis and body have been properly sorted they will be sent off for dipping to remove all dirt and surface rust. Upon its return it will receive a coat of zinc phosphate epoxy primer to protect the metal. Another task this week has been prepping the Jaegermeister BMW CSL race car for the Race Retro auction at Stoneleigh on the 21st of February.
