Lotus Elan’s have a reputation for getting burned, which is exactly what has happened to this one. The fire was isolated to the area surrounding the carburettors but managed to spread behind the dashboard. Luckily the fire was put out before it got too far. There was enough left to warrant a restoration rather than parting it out for spares. The car was stripped and the engine removed before we cut the damaged bodywork out. A new section of bodywork was let in and joined seamlessly to the existing body. It was filled, shaped and rubbed down before being primed and painted. With a fresh coat of paint you can’t even see where we have been. Watch this space for further updates on the restoration of this British icon.
