We have built a full race 1500 MGA engine for the works MGA MBL 867 ready for next weeks Goodwood Revival. A custom made steel crank, steel rods and forged pistons and running on twin SU carburettors. This MGA is one of the earliest pre-production examples that competed as a rally car in the hands of Nancy Mitchell on all the big events of the day including the Mille Miglia. Chris Wigdor brought his C-type in for a tune on the rolling road. Chris is a regular hill climber with his Jaguar.
Ian Gordon brought his very tidy Triumph GT6 MkIII in for a tune up on Friday. Almost too clean to touch, Ian’s GT6 went on the rollers without trouble. We balanced the two Stromberg carburetors before taking it up through the gears and getting the fueling spot on.
Two cars with apparent fueling issues in this week. The GT6 ran perfectly well for 20 minutes when it would stop working. We found that the copper fuel line that was running along the engine block was causing a massive vapor lock when it got hot. Changing this fuel line for a rubber alternative and moving it away from the heat source should help. The E-type had some hard plastic fuel lines at the petrol tank, these weren’t sealing properly and allowing the pumps to pull air into the line. You could see the air bubbles in the glass filter bowl. Again fuel lines replaced for rubber.
Gavin has been very busy building a twin carburetor setup for his stunning 1500cc Borgward Isabella. A very rare car with a very rare engine. Over the winter Gavin found some extra oomph with a straight through exhaust and air feed to the single down draught carb. Now he’s got two Solex carburetors. Graham has been working on the rolling road to get the engine running perfectly ready for the HRDC Touring Greats race this weekend at Donington.
